Notes "D-Horseshoe" style glasses. Popular throughout the 19th century. First the colour green was favoured for the lenses, then in 1830 blue became the latest fashion, and finally in 1860 the neutral gray glasses. They were worn for various reasons, such as an eye injury, protection against light, or the side lenses would be for reading while the front lenses would be for far sight. Sometimes the side panels were filled in with whatever the wearer thought fancy, and it served no purpose other than decoration. The preserver is of a later date and was probably added later. The image features a lot of thumb prints. |
